Rebecca Ruiya Xu - Contemporary Object Maker
Ruiya Xu deals in the sorts of mysteries that would not trouble most minds. Her practice is driven by a thirst for understanding and draws from a broad range of inspirations - time, nihilism, archaeology, post-apocalyptic, both ancient and futuristic.
Ruiya Xu explores these ideas in a typically imaginative way. Each of her projects begins with a specific question and unfolds through the lens of existing scientific principles, offering a hypothesis and constructing a fictional "new mythology for our contemporary era" through speculation and imagination. In-depth research commences from this point. She is a material-based artist, and working with various materials is her way of understanding the world. Through research and experimentation, she utilizes a great range of materials to manifest her "contemporary mythologies" in the physical world. Ruiya's physical practice oscillates between mythology, science fiction, archaeology, and virtual imagination.
